Glyn Jones was born in 1936 in Tynewydd, Rhondda Valley, South Wales. From 1953 to 1957 he studied Fine Art at Cardiff College of Art, and from 1957 to 1960 at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is a member of Ysbryd/Spirit Wales and chairman of the 56 Group Wales.

Artist's Statement: "I am interested in exploring the way in which the process of painting, symbols & abstraction can be used to convey & interpret experience. My interest in Celtic ornamentation, the art & craft of India & North Africa, and the particular sensations I have experienced when travelling in such countries all contribute directly or indirectly to my work.
I usually work on a painting over a long period during which the deliberate application of images & techniques create many chance relationships between colour & form. I see this process of improvisation as similar to that used by many composers & musicians, particularly jazz musicians & those of India. These preoccupations are synthesised through the painting process to fix an image & create a sensation that needs no further alteration." (quoted by kind permission of the artist from the literature to his exhibition at Winchester Cathedral, November 2000).

"I am constantly aware of my Welshness but I am rarely reminded of my Celtic origins. If they are synonymous so be it, it is not an issue for me. However I sense that aspects of both Welsh and Celtic cultures share many of those values which offer an important alternative to the overt materialism of our secularised society. I particularly understand the spiritual dimension which in the distant Celtic past may have been 'magic' but became, centuries later, that glorious Celtic Christian Church and eventually the virile denominational mix, full of contradictions, which characterised the Wales of my childhood: the interwoven sounds and rhythms of choral music, the Welsh preacher as an instrument of the Holy Spirit chanting life-saving wisdom. Such things may surface in unexpected ways as one tries to fix an image which catches their reflection, each reflection being essentially formed and appreciated in our time and not that of the past" (quoted by kind permission of the artist from "Celtic Vision" in LINK No.53, 1986)
